Pastor Besty's challenge this month is to pray Breath Prayers. These are very short prayers that can be prayed in one inhale and exhale, hence the name. In 1 Thessalonians 5:17, we are told to "Pray without ceasing." This is no New Age idea, it is an ancient practice to learn how to manage this daunting feat--pray without ceasing. So, we begin simply. How do you address the Lord when you talk to Him? If you're like me, it varies, but I most often begin with "Lord Jesus." The next step is to be still. Yeah, I know, that's easier said than done these days with all our distractions but you can't skip this step--it is crucial. Let the Lord know you are ready to communicate and that goes both ways. You talk, He listens and He talks, you listen. Keep it short. Keep it biblical. Focus on your breathing and listen to your heart.
Inhale as you say the first part of the prayer and exhale during the second part. For a person who is, by nature, very wordy, keeping my breath prayer to only a few syllables is a challenge. I found some on the internet that are both scriptural and powerful words to me. I am hoping they help me to begin to learn to pray without ceasing.
Sample Breath Prayers
Lord, your servant is listening
Lord, thy will be done
Lord Jesus, grant me peace
Lord, maker of heaven and earth, help me
Lord Jesus, come
Lord, when I am afraid, I will trust in you
Lord Jesus, show your power
Lord God Almighty, reveal your will to me
I am so excited about this most recent challenge. I want to have an ongoing conversation with God. Lord Jesus, teach me!
